SLCC To Observe Graduation Online, In Print And With Celebration Packs Mailed To Grads

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake Community College has planned 2020 commencement observances in May and June to honor graduates online, with celebration packages sent to each graduate and a public tribute to be published in Salt Lake’s daily newspapers.

“Commencement may look a little different this year, but one thing hasn’t changed at all: our extraordinary pride in you, the class of 2020. Congratulations! Your remarkable hard work and determination are worth celebrating,” Charles Lepper, vice president of student affairs, said in an email to graduate candidates.

On May 8, a video message by SLCC President Deneece Huftalin and Provost Clifton Sanders offering their congratulations will be delivered to students’ college email accounts.

The same day, a special public tribute to SLCC’s Class of 2020 will be published in print in the Deseret News and Salt Lake Tribune. The tribute will also be published in both Sunday newspapers on May 10.

The college’s commencement ceremony was originally scheduled for May 8 at the Maverik Center but it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On June 26, the college will release a commencement video that can be watched at any time. It will include many elements of SLCC’s in-person ceremonies — recognition of the college’s graduates of excellence and messages from Huftalin and Student Body President Mason Bancroft.

Graduates who RSVP to the college by midnight June 1 will have their names called on the video accompanied by a personalized slide.

Students who RSVP will receive a celebration package to help them mark the milestone with friends and family. The package will include a 2020 tassel and cap; a commencement program; diploma and diploma cover; honor cords; a SLCC keepsake gift and celebration beads and stickers.

Students must apply for graduation by this Thursday.

The Class of 2020 has also been invited to march with next year’s graduating class on May 7, 2021.
